Swine Flu impact on travel industry - a storm in a tea cup?

GLOBAL international travel is reportedly holding steady despite fears of a worldwide swine flu pandemic, and on a local level South Africans seem to not be paying much attention to Health Minister Barbara Hogan's advice to not "travel if you don't have to" (TIR 360˚ e-News, May 4).

Although international industry organisations, such as The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), are still concerned that a swine flu pandemic could have a serious impact on the global travel and tourism industry, reports from around the world indicate that it's mostly "business as usual". The only tourism destination that has been heavily affected so far has been Mexico, the epicenter of the outbreak.

In South Africa, retail travel groups and tour operators report that travel bookings have not taken a dip, despite the health minister effectively advising South Africans against non-essential travel.

"South African travellers have always displayed a persistence to travel under difficult circumstances and whilst one company that we know of has elected not to send two of their delegates to a conference taking place in South America, the impact has not been great at all.

Responding to Ms. Hogan's comment, several retail travel heads said they believed the health minister's advice - which contradicted that of the World Health Organisation (WHO) - was an overreaction.

"Perhaps all we can ask is that information that is disseminated or statements made are informed and those making them understand their consequence," said Robyn Christie, CEO of ASATA. She added that the impact in South Africa has not been significant. "In fact, ASATA has received queries relating to the preventative action to be taken for those passengers with travel plans," she said.

"Obviously I think avoiding Mexico makes sense, but as for the other countries affected in a minor way, I don't believe that anyone one with any common sense will take her comments too literally," said Will Puk, General Manager of Travel Counsellors SA.

"I have not had any reports of travel counsellors' businesses being affected by this outbreak," he added.

"I think that there is an overreaction about non-essential travel and Barbara Hogan's response has served to create some confusion amongst potential travellers," said Rod Rutter, XL Travel Chief Operating Officer, who added that his members had not had any noticeable cancellations.

Wally Gaynor, Club Travel Managing Director, said the group's travel agencies had also not had cancellations due to concerns over swine flu.

"Warning people not to get onto a plane is, in my opinion, a bit over the top," he said. "As long as travellers take the necessary precautions, it really should not be a problem."

Travellers urged to remain vigilant

While the panic over swine flu seems to have abated over the past week, the WHO is still advising the public to remain vigilant.

At the time of going to press, 22 countries had officially reported 1,534 cases of swine flu. Confirmed deaths include two in the US and 29 in Mexico. South Africa has not reported any confirmed cases, although one suspected case in the Western Cape was still being investigated.

IATA has said its member airlines are also remaining on high alert and that the association has worked with the WHO to prepare guidance materials for front line staff, including cabin crew, maintenance workers, cleaners, passenger agents and cargo/baggage handlers.

"Safety for passengers and crew is our top priority. People getting on planes should be reassured of two things. First, even under normal circumstances, airlines have equipment and measures in place to keep the cabin environment safe. Secondly, the years of planning for the possibility of avian influenza has prepared the industry to deal efficiently with the unfolding situation by following the recommendations of WHO," said IATA Director General, Giovanni Bisignani.

Mr. Bisignani, along with the WTTC and other industry stakeholders, reiterated that there is no cause for panic and that the WHO has clearly stated it is not necessary to close borders or restrict international travel.

"We hope that governments take decisions and coordinate their actions in line with WHO recommendations," he said.

However, he added that some governments are "adjusting immigration procedures, which can create confusion for travellers".

Details of the new requirements are being collected through the IATA Travel Centre and travel agents are advised to access this updated information via www.iatatravelcentre.com

Zuma created dedicated tourism ministry

A dedicated tourism ministry is one of six new ministries created under President Jacob Zuma's expanded Cabinet that was announced last week.

The former Environmental Affairs and Tourism department was split to form a Water and Environmental Affairs department and the new Tourism department. Former Environmental Affairs and Tourism Minister, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, has been appointed Minister of Tourism and Thozile Xasa appointed as his Deputy Minister.

Several industry stakeholders attending last week's Indaba viewed the creation of a dedicated tourism ministry as a good indication of government's intention to place more focus on developing and growing South Africa's tourism industry.

"Tourism is a major GDP earner in South Africa, and it has the potential to keep on creating more and more jobs. It is high time that there is a ministry for tourism only," said Gerhard Patzer, General Manager of the Hilton Durban.

New Air Seychelles Boeing gives boost to South African sector

The arrival of a new Air Seychelles Boeing B767-200ER aircraft is expected to give a considerable boost to traffic on the potentially lucrative South African sector which has been experiencing some congestion and delays which the additional Air Seychelles aircraft is expected to alleviate. The new aircraft and the fourth Boeing in the national airline’s fleet arrived in Seychelles on Wednesday April 29 from Johannesburg where it was being worked on with the national airlines livery and corporate branding. It will undertake its first trip to South Africa on Tuesday May 5. “As the national carrier of the Seychelles, we are focused on the importance of Seychelles as a holiday destination and it is our primary objective to support the local tourism industry,” reiterated Air Seychelles’ Executive Chairman, Captain David Savy who is also a member of the Seychelles Tourism Board.

He confirmed that the acquisition of this second B767-200ER will allow the national airline to extend its regional and international services as the aircraft would strengthen the airline’s presence on current routes served by the Boeing fleet. The aircraft will also be made available for charter flights upon request.
Air Seychelles took delivery of its new aircraft, registered S7-SEZ and with 18 Pearl Class seats and 195 Economy class seats, on April 9th in Miami, USA completing its Boeing fleet which now consists of two B767 – 300 ER’s and two B767-200 ER’s.

Swine flu panic subsides as Mexico opens for travel

The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office has become the first to lift its ban on all but essential travel to Mexico just weeks after the swine flu outbreak began there.

The revised travel advisory follows a steady decline in the number of reported swine flu cases in Mexico since virus infections peaked on April 26. The British authority is, however, still advising citizens travelling to Mexico to take precautions to avoid exposure to the H1N1 virus.

Mexican tourism authorities are now hopeful that other countries will follow the UK's lead and restore much-needed confidence in the country's flagging tourism industry.

The Mexican tourism industry has been hardest hit by the swine flu pandemonium, with at least 25 hotels already forced to close in Cancun since the start of the outbreak.

Tourism stakeholders are desperate to regain lost ground and convince potential visitors that swine flu is no longer a major threat. As an example, several hotels on the country's Caribbean coast are offering a "flu free guarantee", which gives any tourist who catches swine flu while on holiday free holidays for three years.

Meanwhile, the panic over swine flu seems to have abated as infections in most countries, with the exception of Japan, slowed over the past week. However, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned travellers not to be complacent.

According to the WHO, there are now more than 11,000 confirmed cases of swine flu globally and the virus has spread to at least 40 countries. So far 80 people worldwide have died after contracting the virus. The WHO's flu alert remains at Phase 5, one stage down from Phase 6 pandemic level.

Indaba 2009 - one of the most successful ever!

Taking stock of Indaba 2009 – despite economic crisis said to be one of the most successful INDABAs ever.

Didi Moyle, Chief Operating Officer and acting Chief Executive Officer at South African Tourism is full of praise for every effort that went into making this INDABA the success it was. “INDABA is always hard work, and not only for us at South African Tourism. A successful INDABA demands months of planning by every single delegate. It demands an investment of time and energy. It is this partnership and focus on a collective cause that makes INDABA, and our industry, as successful as they are.” Attendance at INDABA was down this year. This was expected in light of the global economic crisis and an industry whose growth has slowed significantly in the last nine months with some tourism businesses closing down. By close of business on Monday afternoon, 12 002 people had come through the INDABA front door. By 5pm on Monday, total attendance figures were down 2.35 percent on 2008 attendance. There were fewer exhibitors at INDABA this year (1.37 percent down on last year) and there were 7.04 percent fewer visitors. However, the number of media delegates grew significantly. There were 10.24 percent more journalists at INDABA this year than last year: 673 journalists in total. Although numbers are down this year, host South African Tourism is not disappointed. Says Moyle: “It’s been a quality rather than a quantity INDABA. We have had numerous reports of brisk business and keen interest in our destination and products ahead of the Confederations Cup and 2010.” The highlight of INDABA was the launch, during the Opening Ceremony, of South African Tourism’s 2010 campaign that invites the world to visit and to experience “rhythm like you’ve never seen before”. The 60 second television commercial (that will be broadcasted on all the major global television networks and at home on the SABC channels) was screened for the first time publicly at the Opening Ceremony and was met with rapturous applause and enthusiasm by the thousands strong audience.

Luxury Travel: The Most Expensive Private Club in the World?

VIP treatment at some of the world's top luxury hotels, resorts, restaurants. Talks about recession and slower economic growth does not seem to have affected one Hong Kong company that's accepted the challenge to develop the most expensive private club in the world...

RS Management Limited, of Hong Kong, has taken up the wonderfully challenging task of creating and launching what could well be the World's Most Expensive Private Club.

It's actually many clubs in one: The new club, simply called "Richman's IMC" is in fact many clubs in one. A single Richman's membership provides its members with exclusive benefits at self owned Mega Yachts, Jockey Clubs, Yachtotels etc. and in addition VIP treatment at partner establishments like Country Clubs, Golf Clubs, Ski Clubs, Shooting Clubs, Fishing Clubs, Hunting Clubs, Gentlemen's Clubs, Supper Clubs, Business and Resort Hotels, Gourmet Restaurants etc. ...worldwide.

Richman's General Managers contend that "to enjoy full membership and VIP privileges at all of these Yachts, Racecourses, private clubs etc. would really cost a fortune. Much, much more than what the highest grade of a Richman's Club membership costs".

Membership to cost millions: Membership at Richman's range from US$15.2 million for the Charter Corporate Platinum Membership which is fully saleable, valid for 30 years and limited to just 100 globally to just US$250,000 for the Individual Silver Membership which is non-transferable and renewable annually. There are several other corporate and individual memberships priced in between these two levels.

At these prices, Richman's could very easily be the World's Most Expensive Private Club that's affordable only by large international corporations, Royalty and the very, very wealthy.

Is the cost justified? A spokesperson for Richman's General Managers said, "Exclusive Private Clubs have been where the real deals have always been done. Yacht Clubs, Jockey Clubs, Race Horse ownership and Horse Racing (the sport of Kings), have always been and continues to be where the truly wealthy meet and get the real, deals done.

With the increasing uncertainty of doing business with unknown counter-parties, many business experts predict the return of the age old tradition of preferring to do business with the inner circle of known persons (and companies) - like your own club members".

"Just imagine how many local and international clubs you would have to join; and how much it would cost in time, effort and expense to enjoy all the following benefits:

Exclusive privileges for member and guests to enjoy fine dining on all-organic foods, therapeutic massage, the companionship of beautiful hostesses…etc. at any time on board some of the world's most luxurious custom yachts stationed on international waters just outside major emerging market cities;

Exclusive access to real inside information through regular opportunity to meet and network with the world's real insiders i.e. royalty, influential government officials, corporate chiefs, scientists and successful businessmen the exclusive right to own and race horses in China – the world's most profitable market for horse racing, and the prestige of winning championship awards and the chance to win millions of dollars in cash prizes every week;

VIP status welcome and member privileges at some of the world's best golf clubs, ski resorts, country clubs, hunting clubs and city clubs;

Confidential Concierge and Problem Resolution Services that include 24 hours on-board and international out-call medical emergency assistance, global executive travel assistance, personal bodyguards, travel guides and personal companions worldwide;

VIP treatment at some of the world's top hotels, resorts, restaurants, gentlemen's clubs and gentleman's outfitters; The ability to charge expenses to just one global, unique biometrics-protected, exclusive club card, embedded with a dynamically adjusted global credit line of up to US$1,000,000".

The Wealthy are smart too: "While on the surface our memberships may appear expensive in absolute terms. But remember the wealthy are smart too. They look at relative values not just at absolute prices. Relative to the benefits our members enjoy, the price of membership is not at all expensive. In fact, we know that even if a much larger sum was spent today, it is doubt if similar benefits would be available from any other single club in the world".

Some additional benefits Richman's members enjoy is a Global Concierge & Problem Resolution service which includes 24 hours emergency medical assistance and pre-approved global credit lines of up to US$1,000,000 per membership.

Why launch in these bad times? When asked why the Richman's club was being launched in such adverse economic times, a spokesperson explained that "the current economic climate is in fact an ideal time to purchase the various club assets like Yachts etc. for our members use. We are saving as much as 40% compared to a year ago. This also means we can offer better quality assets in our clubs. Because of this, we expect that once our membership is closed and the economy improves ...as it inevitably will...secondary market prices for our membership will be much higher. Those who bought earlier should profit if they decide to sell.

Membership still not open to the public? According to RS Management "We have not as set a date to open applications for general membership. The only class of memberships currently being privately placed, to a selected number of corporations worldwide, are the 100 Charter Corporate Platinum Memberships".

3 Ways Your Business Can Thrive in Tough Economic Times

A troubled economy doesn’t mean your company will fail.

In fact, quite the opposite. It’s an opportunity for your company to flourish.

Economic obstacles can be beneficial to companies because they force businesses to reevaluate marketing campaigns, business transactions, target markets, and products / services. After developing a stronger focus, the improvements will make your business more successful, increasing customers and profits.

Some businesses may think reassessing and changing business activities means more money out of their budget. This is a myth.

It’ll take a bit more time and effort to change the direction of your business in this troubled economy, but not necessarily more money.

Here are 3 free ways you can make your business thrive in uneasy times:

1. Submitting online articles to article directories are free. They’re an excellent way to appeal to potential clients and be viewed as an expert in your field. Putting inbound links to your website at the end of the article allows for more clicks to your website and provides a solid, quality link.

2. Blog. Creating a blog is free and produces similar benefits to those of an article. A constantly updated blog can also provide customers tips and news relevant to your company.

3. Frequency marketing programs can be extremely beneficial to your company since they’re used to increase sales, referrals, and your frequent-customer list. For example, a frequency marketing program can use a point system. Every dollar a customer spends earns them points, and once they reach 100 points, they receive 25% off the next purchase. There are numerous variations on frequency marketing programs, and many are implemented through sending emails to current clients.

Is it a Bird or a Plane? No, it's a Super Hotel

Converted 1960s Airplane is 'Now Boarding' Guests for a Luxury Stay

If you consider sleeping on an airplane to be uncomfortable, cramped and prone to temperature extremes, take a look at the conditions aboard this Ilyushin 18 airplane. This particular aircraft at Amsterdam's Teuge airport is not cleared for takeoff. It has been turned into a 5-star hotel suite and will stay permanently parked at the end of a runway. Dutch entrepreneur Ben Thijssen spent approximately $640,000 to convert the 131-foot long aircraft into a hotel with wings. He outfitted it with premium amenities including a whirlpool, infrared sauna, three flat-screen televisions, a kitchenette and wireless internet.

Staying in this unique suite will only run you approximately $500 per night and includes breakfast for two. Thijssen told ABC News.com that his Hotel Honecker has enjoyed enormous success since he opened it on a trial basis to work out the kinks. The hotel was officially launched on Aug. 1.

Maldives Roadshow South Africa March 2011

Maldives Roadshow

Exclusive Serenity Hotels & Resorts Representation organizes the “Maldives Road Show 2011” in South Africa in March 2011 and invites the travel trade to join and learn more about this fascinating destination. The workshops take place nationwide in the cities of Pretoria, Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town from 1-3 March 2011.

“We noticed an increased interest in Maldives and also found that a lot of travel agents expressed a need to learn more about the destination”, explains Melanie Floor, CEO of Exclusive Serenity, the reason for the roadshow.

Teaming up with well-known industry players, the exhibiting companies during the roadshow are Coco Palm Resorts, Constance Hotels, Emirates Holidays, Holiday Tours, Naiade Holidays (Diva Resort) and The Holiday Factory.

“A lot of agents mentioned that although they find Maldives attractive as destination, they find it difficult to get their clients there”, reports Melanie Floor. “50% of our exhibitors are tour operators who will be an important contact for agents to provide information and packages to Maldives”.

Maldives has deep blue seas, turquoise reefs, white sandy beaches and palm trees. It is also a place full of character, where its people have long spent their days languishing in the very essence of idyll living. While it is the perfect place to sit on a beach and watch a sunset with a cocktail balanced on your hand, it is also a geographical marvel, knowing that there are thousands of fish swimming around the vivid corals just a few feet away from where you sit.

Maldives is a dream for those who enjoy watersports, it fascinates with excursions to inhabited islands to experience the lifestyle of the locals. If a honeymoon is meant to be a celebration of love in an intimate, secluded, and most importantly, beautiful setting, then the Maldives is the world’s best backdrop.

And lastly, for those who appreciate spa and wellness will certainly find their relaxation at the spas in the various resorts but also by just lying on a deserted beach of a Maldivian island, taking in nothing but the continuous rhythm of the waves, the sea salt in the air and even feeling the soft white sand on your bare feet is enough to sooth your senses.
