Captain Ton Milo's Catch of the Day at Frégate Island

The fresher the fish, the finer the flavour - and what could be fresher than a beautiful red snapper, line-caught by your own hand and simply barbecued the moment you splash your way back onto the soft sandy shores of your tropical island haven? At Frégate Island Private, one of the world’s most exclusive luxury island retreats, guests can now experience the unique thrill of mastering the waves to catch some of the succulent silvery treasures that teem in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean – using the very same techniques and traditional ‘technology’ that have served generations of Seychellois fishermen so well over the centuries.

As you and your fishing buddies step aboard the humble-looking, sun-bleached Seychellois fishing boat bobbing in Frégate’s marina, you’ll be greeted by your skipper, Ton Milo the fisherman - a venerable old seadog whose deeply tanned, weather worn features tell tales of a lifetime sailing the Indian Ocean.

As the gentle roll of the waves lulls you into a blissful sun-kissed reverie, your personal ancient mariner for the day will share the secrets and hard-won local knowhow that make him and his simple, authentic boat more than a match for the very latest big game fishing boats bristling with kit. As you’re happily reeling in another delicious addition to the day’s lunch, Captain Ton Milo will regale you with fishy folklore, salty tales of the ocean, and time-honoured legends of pirates and sea spirits that echo down the ages to shiver your timbers!

Returning triumphant to shore with the shimmering spoils, Frégate’s skillful chefs will be ready and waiting to prepare and cook the day’s catch on a barbecue right there on one of the island’s seven dream beaches - another experience unique to Frégate Island Private.

The ‘Catch of the Day’ experience is offered on a request basis only, subject to availability, for an additional fee of 10,000 Seychelles Rupees.

Release of Tortoises on Frégate Island

Frégate Island has the second largest population of Aldabra Giant Tortoises, with approximately 2000 free-roaming individuals. These tortoises are capable of growth throughout their life, if conditions permit, and can live to be 150 years or older. The average weight of males is 250kg and females 150kg. They are often found in numbers in shady areas during the heat of the day. The tortoises on the island are not tame or domesticated, but are generally indifferent to the presence of people. When frightened, tortoises quickly pull their heads into their shell, making a hissing sound as they expel air from their lungs.

On Frégate Island, baby tortoises are kept in a pen for protection, where they are spoiled with plenty leaves, fruits and fresh water. Once they are old enough or reach a certain size, they are released into the wild. The release happens twice a year, usually during the festive season for the Christmas and New Year programme.

giant tortoises

On 23rd December 2011 and 1st January 2012, the Ecology team along with our Managing Director and guests released a total of 30 Aldabra Giant Tortoises at Anse Parc area. Immediately after the release, the tortoises started to explore the area, roaming around the lawn and feeding on new leaves. They are being monitored and have adapted to their new surroundings with ease.

Eco News on Frégate Island

Successful translocation of the Seychelles Warbler

The 100th bird on the list - Frégate Island is now home to the Seychelles Warbler (Acrocephalus sechellensis). A translocation from Cousin Island Special Reserve was a great success and the new population has adapted extremely well, with the birds dispersing widely over the island and displaying for mates. The translocation took place on the 7th and 14th of December 2011 and a total of 59 birds were transferred. After the birds were caught on Cousin, each bird was individually packed into cardboard boxes, brought to Frégate by helicopter and released on the same day. The warblers were released near to the tennis court, an area previously identified as 'high quality' habitat during a pre-translocation survey. All the birds appeared fit and healthy upon release with no signs of injuries.

seychelles warbler

After the translocation, the warblers spread quickly away from the release site and within a day or two these intriguing passerines were all over the island. These charming little birds have lovely calls and are easily attracted to the observer by whistling and phishing. The objective of the translocation is to establish another breeding population of the once Critically Endangered Seychelles warbler, allowing the species to be down listed from Vulnerable to Near Threatened and removed from the BirdLife International List of Threatened Bird Species of the World.

Migrant birds on Frégate Island

Birding on Frégate the last few months has provided us with some special sightings including species that have not been recorded here before by us, although they have been recorded on the island previously. A female garganey has made herself at home since November in the pond next to the marina. She was very skittish at first, but these days pays us scant attention and goes about her business as we are not even there. December saw the arrival of two blue-cheeked bee-eaters, with their characteristic calls alerting us to their presence. They were around for a few days before disappearing from the plateau in the area of the spa and Glacis Cerf.

migrant birds

Both frigate bird species were regularly seen patrolling over the island in December, with more than 20 individuals being seen together on a number of occasions. Cuckoos have made their annual return to Frégate with four common cuckoos seen at different locations around the island. We once again look forward to finding some new and interesting species in the next couple of months.

New Management on Frégate Island

Luxury resort specialist, Paul van Frank, has been appointed as the new Managing Director of Frégate Island Private, in the Seychelles, effective from 15 December 2011. Taking over the reins from interim General Manager Ian Barbour, who successfully ran the ultra exclusive eco retreat for the past nine months, the multi-lingual hospitality veteran joins Frégate Island Private after more than two years as General Manager of Shanti Maurice in Mauritius, during which time he successfully repositioned the property as a luxury lifestyle resort and award-winning spa.

Award-winning private eco retreat offers honeymoons and weddings fit for a king. "Firstly, on behalf of the entire team at Frégate Island Private, I wish to express our gratitude to Ian Barbour for all of his hard work, commitment and dedication, which is greatly appreciated. It is an honour to have been given this unmissable opportunity to capture the essence of such a unique, eco-conscious and exclusive island, that is justly regarded as a destination in its own right,” says van Frank. “I am thrilled to have been invited to lead this ultra-luxurious island resort to achieve its full potential, for the enjoyment of the most discerning of world travellers.” he added.

paul van frank

Frégate Island Private is a multi award-winning luxury eco retreat and member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and Virtuoso. The original luxury eco-hideaway, Frégate Island Private is located in the Seychelles, in the midst of the Indian Ocean. Exemplary preservation, protection and nurturing of the island’s unique natural environment, and the utmost in exclusivity for guests, are the central principles at Frégate: abundant fresh produce from the island’s plantations form the basis of the culinary and spa concepts, while a resident ecologist coordinates ongoing work towards the seamless integration of resort operations into ecological programme. After studying law, Paul van Frank graduated with honours in Business Economics and Public Relations. A Belgian National, van Frank has some 25 years experience running some of the world’s finest resorts.

His hospitality career began on the island of Antigua in the West Indies and took him on to Saint Lucia, before he embarked on his first appointment as General Manager at the deluxe Fort Young Hotel on the island of Dominica, in the Eastern Caribbean. Following three years overseeing the opening of the Renaissance Resort Aruba, Paul van Frank returned to Antigua in the capacity of General Manager until 1995, when he left the West Indies after some 11 years to spend over four years in Istanbul, initially as General Manager and thereafter as Managing Director of Turkey’s internationally recognised Kemer Golf & Country Club. He then spent two years as General Manager of Begawan Giri Estate in Bali, during which time the Estate was awarded ‘Best of the Best’ by the readers of Condé Nast Traveller.

His career then took him to Thailand, with a three year tenure as Chief Operating Officer of Rayavadee, in Krabi and sister property Tamarind Village in Chiang Mai, during which time Rayavadee was listed in the Condé Nast Traveller ‘Gold List 2005’. His ascent continued with his appointment as General Manager of Ananda in the Himalayas in 2008 – which also subsequently featured in Condé Nast Traveller’s ‘Gold List 2009’, as well as being voted runner up in ‘The World’s 100 Best Spas’ by the same publication the previous year.

Explore the Pirates History

The very first inhabitants of Frégate Island were in fact pirates. We believe they set foot on Frégate in the 16th certainly not later than the beginning of the 18th century. Frégate along with other Seychellois islands was the perfect hideout for pirates who had perfect hunting grounds along the shipping routes from and to Goa following the keel waters of Vasco da Gama.

Pirates Post on Frégate Island Private in SeychellesStill today the legacy of the pirates is to be seen on Frégate Island Private: A trip into the past starts at the island’s museum based at the previous plantation house where guests can learn more about the history and listen to Pirates stories. Thereafter several pirate-sites on the island wait to be explored. The remains of an old fort in Anse Parc, the big excavation hole where 15 years ago intense digging was undertaken to find the famous Le Vasseur treasure and with it the solid Golden Cross of Goa; the marked pirates stone with mysterious carvings and even James Bond author Ian Fleming was digging for the famous treasure of Captain la Buse. However, the real treasure is probably more likely to be the orange trees growing on this island for over 300 years. The pirates must have spat out the seeds of the various citrus fruit they carried on their journeys to prevent scurvy. Anse Parc was the perfect landing place as it is in the lee of the winds, no other island can be seen from Anse Parc and allows secret landing and departures, has great sandy beaches and the close-by well provides fresh and clean drinking water.

Today, Frégate Island Private is one of the world’s most exclusive private retreats, a remote island located in the Seychelles in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Once the island attracted pirates but now it lures the discerning and privileged with its soothing climate, tropical forests, and hidden coves of dazzling white sand.

Etihad to fly to Seychelles

ETIHAD Airways is to launch four return services to Mahé as of November 1, confident of a peak in interest among travellers, particularly those from European markets.

Seychelles Tourism Board Director Africa, UAE & the Americas, David Germain, said, while South Africans would likely still opt to travel to the destination from Johannesburg, the commitment from Etihad would hopefully encourage other airlines to invest in servicing the route in future.

Etihad will operate flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and use its Airbus A320 aircraft on the route, which is configured with both Pearl Business and Coral Economy Class cabins.

The Seychelles Tourism Board has welcomed the decision by Etihad Airways to start operating flights to Seychelles from Abu Dhabi with effect from the 1st November 2011.

Etihad AirwaysAlain St.Ange, the CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board said that this is good news for the Seychelles. “Abu Dhabi is an important hub in its own right and the UAE is a potential market for Seychelles and this direct air link will only help to consolidate the Seychelles position as an accessible tourism destination” said Alain St.Ange Etihad Airways on their part issued the following statement: “Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has announced it will commence operations to Mahé in the Republic of Seychelles on November 1, subject to government approval. Etihad will operate four return services per week from its home base in Abu Dhabi to Seychelles International Airport in Mahé. The service will be operated by an Airbus A320 aircraft, configured in Pearl Business and Coral Economy class, offering 1,088 seats each week. James Hogan, Etihad Airways’ Chief Executive Officer, said: “The Seychelles has strong and growing appeal as a premium leisure destination, with increasing numbers of UAE residents and European travellers holidaying there. With the recent honeymoon of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the Seychelles is likely to gain new interest as a destination of choice.

“Our increased frequencies from mid-2011 on some of our primary routes from Europe make the approaching Northern Winter period an ideal time to launch these new services. We expect this will be a hugely popular destination, in particular for holidaymakers from the Gulf Cooperation Council and European markets, due to the ease of connecting services through Abu Dhabi and convenient scheduling.” In addition to the leisure appeal of the Seychelles, the United Arab Emirates – and Abu Dhabi in particular – have investment interests in the destination, further supporting Etihad’s entry to the route.

The Seychelles comprises 115 islands in the western Indian Ocean, located off of the east coast of Africa. The 41 inner islands constitute the oldest mid-oceanic granite islands on earth, with another 74 islands forming the low-lying coral atolls and reef islands of the outer islands. The inner islands cluster mainly around the principal islands of Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, forming the cultural and economic hub of Seychelles, as well as the centre of its tourism industry.

Exclusive Serenity intrigues with prestigious “Diamonds of the Indian Ocean” event

Cape Town, 12 August 2010. In cooperation with Uwe Koetter and The Idiom Collection, Exclusive Serenity organised a prestigious evening at the premises of Uwe Koetter Jewellers in Cape Town. Under the motto “Diamonds of the Indian Ocean”, Exclusive Serenity presented Frégate Island Private in the Seychelles and Coco Palm Bodu Hithi in Maldives to selected travel trade professionals. The highlight of the evening was the diamond cocktail: everybody got a glass of champagne which included a gem… one of them was the real diamond. From the moment the guests - by invitation only – entered the prestigious showroom at Uwe Koetter Jewellers, it was clear that they were in for a treat.

With compliments of The Idiom Collection, guests were spoiled with exquisite, award-winning wines: a rare and opulent wooded Viognier from the Rhône and the decadent Cape Blend which has won its own Diamond at the Investec Winemakers Choice, Double Gold at Michelangelo, Gold at Veritas and 4 Stars Wine Magazine.

Diamonds of the Indian Ocean Event

Uwe Koetter Jewellers have become one of the most renowned jewellery design and manufacturing companies in South Africa. They have also won many awards in recognition of pieces unique both in quality and design. Whilst enjoying their wines, guests could take some time to get inspired by the various jewellery on display prior to a demonstration at the workshop. Johan Louw, the General Manager at Uwe Koetter Jewellers, demonstrated how to make a wedding band which was an interesting and fascinating experience.

Following award-winning wine, the evening progressed with the diamond cocktail. Each guest received a glass of champagne for their enjoyment prior to the presentation of the “Diamonds of the Indian Ocean” by Exclusive Serenity: Coco Palm Bodu Hithi in Maldives introduced by Christiane Rieth, followed by a presentation about Frégate Island Private in the Seychelles by Melanie Floor.

Prior to the diamond testing, Kerry Collins from "here’s my card" won a stay at 15 on Orange, sponsored by Opulent Living, South Africa's most prestigious coffee table magazine.

Finally guests could take their diamond cocktails to the “diamond testing station” where the competent team of Uwe Koetter checked the stones and found out whether the gem was the real diamond. The lucky winner got to keep the real diamond found in the champagne glass. The diamond cocktail was sponsored with compliments of Uwe Koetter Jewellers and was the highlight of a truly memorable evening.
